[...] One group of computer scientists quickly finds flaws with the status quo and looks at doing things differently. In the case of databases these were only the answer to some of the needs because they brought with them their own set of restrictions. Object storage is using a separate layer above the file system but is different from a database. The motivation for doing things differently lies in the reality of the computing schema combined with what problems object based storage is trying to fix. A parallel is CAS [1] footnote.
There is one typographical error that I need to correct. Cisco provides the Nexus and MDS switches in the Vblock, your blog states VNX / MDS switches.

Just the type of new partnership relationship we should expect in a vertically integrated world. HP perhaps could learn from VCE to help it out of its regidly horizontal positioning.
It will be interesting to see how Citrix and Cisco's new relationship will be handled by VCE.

Claus
A great piece of analysis. In my discussions with Fujitsu in the UK last year it made the point that as a Japanese supplier the regions make their own decisions. I wrote "Fujitsu’s approach is to give its regional offices more autonomy, allowing regional managers to make decisions on a large number of issues (although not on big investments or branding)." in my post http://martinhingley.wordpress.com/2010/04/27/fujitsu-cloud-computing-q210/. So a move towards more of a global strategy will be a major shift in direction.
For me this is about the increasing vertical integration of IT suppliers. Fujitsu and Dell want to make more of their own developments in the storage systems space, which looks like a great revenue earner over the next few years. Traditionally EMC not only OEMed products, but also had cross-selling agreements with the likes of HP, ICL, Bull and Fujitsu. Those companies have been going more alone, often purchasing interesting small networked storage companies into the bargain. EMC has also done that: however its partnering with Cisco and (its mostly owned subsidiary) VMware in creating VCE is a go-to-market approach mirroring the vertical integration approaches of others. Whether or not this succeeds in making up for the loss of OEM contracts is uncertain, although it's interesting to watch. Smaller companies like Dot Hill also have to think about going it alone, as do new entrants like Avere. I suppose they also have possible exit strategies by being acquired by the systems companies.
As for your comment about Fujitsu trying to emulate IBM and HP: I for one have always put them there, albeit it with a strong Japanese focus.
Best - Martin
