When meeting Axxana I was impressed with the simplicity of their solution and the way in which they seem to be dealing with these 'speed of light' issues. Your post deals with the technical issues for DR well. It'll be interesting to see if and when more OEMs sign up for the Phoenix Blackbox.
Best Wishes

It's going to get even more difficult with Cloud Computing. If I'm right in thinking that users don't care, don't know and in many cases can't find out where their personal data is located, then the regulators job becomes vital.
In the UK they're tightening up on financial regulation in the Retail industry in October, but can't even handle virtual servers. Cloud applications will be excluded unless they gain a lot of knowledge before then. If they got turbo boosted they might even help to protect the local Managed Services market by encapsulating governence, data and privacy information issues in their rules, but it doesn't look likely.
For the IT managers of services companies, focusing on issues of trust will help protect their organisations from legal action. However it's going to get even more difficult to handle the balance between modern applications, customer and citizen privacy.
Can you tell us about the techniques they might develop to cope?
Best Wishes

Your analysis of the basics is sound as always. I've been looking a Double-Take who have an interesting approach - launching replicated virtual servers, initially with Amazon. They are moving towards 'Recovery as a Service'. But there are many permutations on how a large organisation may choose to address back-up when building private Clouds of course.

Thanks. CDP is a good concept for capturing updates only. I look forward to learn more about R1Soft as a cloud based target.

Claus,

Thanks for the post.

One of my clients, R1Soft, enables cloud-based data-protection services, but it starts with the outsourcing of web-hosting. Cloud-resident applciations are, I believe, another beach head for cloud-based storage services. It's an extension of the application.

Following a phone update with CommVault today, I just want to highlight that CommVault's Farline enables back-up and archive in Cloud rather than online-storage in Cloud.

Claus
For me the announcement is typical how data centre 'component' suppliers vie for position in a downturn. The IT budget has gone down - so if Symantec can reduce storage systems and communications spending through de-dupe, IT managers spending will go down despite the extra software costs. At least that's the idea.
Oracle, VMWare, Microsoft have all succeeded at various times in the past. I believe Symantec will have a good go this time.
Best Wishes
